Day Six
Rest day, quick look at Cunnamulla, visited the Robbers tree so called after Joseph Wells robbed the National Bank in 1880. Wells accidentally injured a storekeeper in a struggle to escape was unable to mount his horse and ran into the bush, where a dog tracked his scent to the base of the tree. He was tried and sentenced to death for robbery under arms and shooting with intent. The bank manager storekeeper and prominent citizens petitioned against severity of the sentence .A deputation of the ministry unsuccessfully presented the petition to the Governor. Though the wounding was an accident, he cold have but did not shoot the arresting policeman, had no legal representation, pleaded guilty without him or the jury aware of the consequences he was hanged aged 21.
