Up early to catch train to Kuranda had light breakfast at not so light price at the station. The train pulled out just before 0900 on the 37k 1 3/4 hour journey up to Kuranda climbing one metre every 50 metres from sea level to 328 metres above. Built between 1886 and 1891 32 men killed during construction and many more rumoured to have died from infections and snakebite. At its peak 1500 men working on construction and to get a job you had to supply your own tools, pick and shovel.
The train trip up provides some stunning views and photo opportunities if you are in the right hand seats the aisle seats looked predominantly at the mountain side so it is a bit of a lottery as seats are allocated.
Kuranda is a beautiful small market village in the rainforest. In the 70s the hippies moved in and began marketing their wares, the village now has four markets with little food stalls selling cuisine from all around the world. We had chip twister and churros, a Spanish donut which were delicious light fluffy almost creamy texture.
You could easily spend a day or two here with markets, the butterfly sanctury other wildlife exhibits and scenic walks.
The skyrail down was very good with the serenity of drifting above the rainforest punctuated by the bump and rattle as you passed by each pylon. Once again photo opportunities were a bit hit and miss.
Bussed back to railway station to conclude a very enjoyable day.
