Head off for drive through Pioneer Valley to Broken River to hopefully see a platypus. The first 73 Ks are relatively mundane as you pass through the ubiquitous cane fields with the odd village and town in between. The next 4.5ks rises 2000 feet into the rainforest to Eungella. Broken river is 5 Ks further on and though we gave it around an hour a a a half not a platypus to be seen. Stopped at Eungella Chalet, for a drink and view the valley below, just could have stayed all day but there was the matter of getting back down the mountain. Turned off to Finch Hatten gorge and took the 2 8 k walk through forest up to Araluen Falls, Wheel of Fire cascades is a further 1.4ks but much of it at a gradient of 1 to 1 so we gave it a miss.
Although we did not see a platypus the walks and scenery was compensation enough and we headed back to camp.
